The Opportunity

 

The Communications Specialist ensures the organization's messages are shared in a consistent way with internal and external audiences. The Communicatons Specialist is an expert writer, editor, and communicator, and oversees communication activities inside and outside the organization. As a key member of the Communications team, this role will develop internal and external communication activities including risk mitigating communication strategies. This role also designs communications plans, writes key messages, and liaises with media, including speaking on behalf of the company and coordinating media events.

 

Reporting Structure

 

Reports to: Manager, Employee Communication & Connection

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

  • Develop strategies and content for intranet and other internal communication tools
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to provide communication counsel on high-priority internal and external messaging
  • Develop and execute communications plans to a defined calendar in support of departmental and organizational goals
  • Develop messages,  including planning, writing, reviewing, formatting, editing, proofreading, and disseminating through various channels
  • Identify, research, assess and create editorial content for internal and external use across the organization in accordance with established processes
  • Work collaboratively with the production and design team to assist in the development of materials for publication via various channels including digital, social and print
  • Audit internal communication systems and provide advice/recommendations to senior leaders
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions and workshops and provide recommendations for improvements
  • Assist in organizing on-site events, media and company announcements that include the gathering and production of various communication products in a variety of mediums
  • As needed, respond to media requests and inquiries in writing, phone, or in person
  • Monitor industry news and flag key information, inaccuracies, and content

 

Secondary Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure corporate voice and brand standards are maintained.
  • Identify, recommend and apply ways to improve communication by researching, reviewing and assessing technological advancements to create new communication efficiencies.
  • Manage budget, forecasting and project timelines for internal communication initiatives.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the NSLC’s Values, Social Responsibility mandate and Workplace Health and Safety.
  • Other related duties as assigned; travel, primarily in Nova Scotia, as required.

 

Qualifications

 

As a qualified candidate, you will have:

 

  • Undergraduate degree in public relations, communications, journalism or marketing
  • 5 to 8 years’ experience in a communication or public relations role

 

As the ideal candidate, you will also have:

 

  • Experience in an internal communications role
  • Communications or marketing experience in a retail organization
  • Experience with media relations

 

An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered equivalent.
